Wildlife conservation is in Taru and Roan Carr-Hartley’s blood.
The 20-something brothers were raised in Africa by their grandmother, groundbreaking conservationist Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Their mother, Angela Sheldrick, now heads up The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which rescues and rehabilitates orphaned rhinos and elephants in Kenya.
Taru and Roan are both skilled helicopter pilots who head out every day to perform anti-poaching patrols over Tsavo and the Chyulu Hills National Parks. While out on patrol on May 3, 2023, the brothers found themselves in the position to help a human in trouble, instead of saving animals!
A tanker truck driver driving across the Galana Kulalu causeway earlier that morning had been swept away by a sudden flood, which is not uncommon in this area. The driver had been clinging to the top of the overturned truck for about six hours when the brothers arrived on the scene.
Pilot Taru had to use all of the skills in his wheelhouse to battle the gusting winds and uncertain terrain, but he managed to hover his craft just six inches above the submerged truck. Roan then pulled the grateful driver to safety and brought him back to dry land.
