After Living in a Roadside Zoo All Their Lives, Chimps Share a Touching Hug at a New Sanctuary Home

As they entered a brand-new sanctuary, four chimpanzees who had been rescued from a roadside zoo were spotted cuddling and sharing a love hug. They were kept indoors by an exotic animal keeper whose facilities had received numerous complaints about animal cruelty and who had recently been given a prison sentence when they were discovered in Ohio at a zoo called the Union Ridge Wildlife Center. The Florida’s Save the Chimps sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida, was to receive custody of the four chimpanzees names April, Anna, Cash, and Lucy, according to an order from the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The four chimpanzees can be seen bonding joyfully with one another in the quarantine area, where they will spend the next two months before being integrated into one of the sanctuary’s 12 chimp islands, which cover a total of 150 acres.Dr. Andrew Halloran, Director of Chimpanzee Behavior and Care at Save the Chimps, stated that these

chimps ‘are extremely intelligent and deserve the opportunity to explore a larger world.’

The ‘very sweet’ chimps, whose ages vary from 13 to 26, are settling in well to their new environment, according to the sanctuary.

‘We look forward to seeing them thrive on a vast island habitat with 15-20 new lifelong companions,

with the freedom to choose where they want to be and who they want to be with,” stated Halloran.
